Sunlight and Water:

Integrating Literacy, Science and Social Studies in a Kindergarten Classroom

I have recently been awarded a small grant to conduct a co-investigation with Melissa Brownlow, an experienced kindergarten teacher, on how provincially mandated Kindergarten language arts, social studies, and science outcomes can be addressed through a spring and autumn gardening and food project. Melissa and I share interests in emergent curriculum, inquiry based learning and education for environmental sustainability.

Our current research questions are:

1)   How does an experienced kindergarten teacher integrate and address language, literacy, science and social studies curriculum expectations through an engagement with gardening and food?

2)   What does this kind of integration and engagement look like in the Spring of a Kindergarten year?

3)   What does this kind of integration and engagement look like in the Autumn of a Kindergarten year?
